For 40 years on the fourth Saturday of October, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival has brought together a host of musicians, moonshiners, craftspeople, cooks, motorheads, mule jumpers, horse pullers, coon dog racers, antique tractor buffs, and old-time gamers for a celebration of the rich heritage and traditions of the region. Our festival participants are the real thing, sharing folk traditions that have been a part of their families and/or communities for years.
Covering much of the Ferrum College campus and Ferrum's 1800 living history farm museum, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival is handicap accessible. It is a rain or shine event. Parking is free, and ticket sales go toward offsetting the costs of staging the festival and other Blue Ridge Institute programs. Fall colors around the lake will be at their peak for this tour of the Paddy's Creek cove by canoe. Park Superintendent Nora Coffey will lead this special tour that includes instruction on proper paddling techniques and entering and exiting a canoe. Pre-registration is required for the limited number of vessels available. Bring binoculars, a camera and footwear that can get wet. This guided, lantern-lit evening walk traverses the plantation from the kitchen to the slave quarters with stops along the way to meet and learn about the lives of the more than 94 enslaved men, women and children who kept Poplar Forest running. Experience the magic of African American storytellers as they bring period folktales and myths to life; listen to the soulful sounds of traditional black spirituals; and more.
Legends of the Land tours are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 6-16 and free for children under 5 and younger. A costumed guide will light the way by lantern through Salem's nighttime streets. Visit several haunting stops in the historic district where you will hear tales of a local ghostly legends, or interact with a person from the past. You might even catch a glimpse of a ghost or two among our historic buildings! Tours are scheduled every 15 minutes and last 45 minutes to one hour. Participation is limited, reservations for tour times recommended. Open spaces will be filled each night on a first come, first serve basis. A mystery over time becomes a legend, and a legend grows in the telling. It was Halloween night in 1906 when one of the students from the Biltmore Forest School disappeared. His name was Tommy Hodges. The Cradle of Forestry will present this outdoor drama along the paved, one-mile Biltmore Campus Trail. As the audience walks the trail from scene to scene it meets characters from the historic Pink Beds community and hears stories, some based on the diaries of students who attended the Biltmore Forest School from 1903-1907. Warm clothing, walking shoes and flashlights are recommended. Check the website or call for show times. Show times will be 6:30pm, 7:45pm, and 9:00pm each night. Admission to the show is $6.00 for ages 16 and up, $3.00 for ages 5-15, Federal Recreation Pass holders and Golden Age Passport holders. Hot cider and cookies are provided.
