We hear it all the time. Travelers come up from the ‘flat lands’ and their first words are almost always something like “Ahh, it’s so much cooler up here.” And they’re right. It is not just physically cooler up here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Carroll County Virginia. It’s ‘Cooler’ up here too. Whether it is breath-taking mountain vistas or cooling mountain streams, challenging mountain drives or golf, authentic cuisine and shopping, outdoor adventure or cool mountain lore and history you seek, Carroll County has just the answer.
There is no place ‘cooler’ than the little community of Fancy Gap for your Parkway adventure. Located at Milepost 199.4 (or from exit 8 on I-77), Fancy Gap is a perennial favorite to start, end or just make a day of it during your Blue Ridge Parkway journey.
All travelers are encouraged to start your visit to Carroll County and Fancy Gap with a visit to the Blue Ridge Plateau Regional Visitors Center. Located just off I-77 at exit 14 in the Southwest Virginia Farmers Market, this certified Virginia Visitor Center is a great resource to find out about the area, history, attractions, dining and lodging options. Plus, the Visitors Center doubles as an Artisan Center featuring the works of 180 local craftspeople and having over 7000 items to marvel. And you can take a treasure to two home too as the fine art and craft featured at the visitor center is available to purchase.
After a quick stop at the Visitors Center, head south on I-77 to exit 8 (about 6 miles). Make a left on Chance’s Creek Rd and turn right when you reach the intersection of SR52 (Fancy Gap Highway). After about a mile you will reach shopping Nirvana. Spend an hour or spend the day at the Shops of Fancy Gap. Check out Treasure Potts Antique & Garden Shoppes for a great selection of high quality antiques and home items. Walk just a little distance to the Nest and Hive Shop, Caroline’s Craft and Gifts and browse the great selection at Mountain Star Gallery.
Lunch & Afternoon
Hungry? We hope so. Your next stop will be lunch at the Fancy Gap Deli just across the street from Mountain Star Gallery. Only the freshest soups, sandwiches and salads are served here. The Gap Deli is one popular destination for both Parkway travelers and locals alike.
Next we will need to burn off some of those calories and nothing can beat a round of golf at Skyland Lakes Golf Club (between Parkway MM 202 and 203). Mountain golf is like nothing you have ever experienced before. The well-maintained course with its change in elevation and cool mountain breezes makes golf in the Blue Ridge both challenging and thoroughly enjoyable.
There are lots of local choices for dinner. You might be a little tuckered out after all this fun, so why not just relax for the night at Fancy Gap Campground, Cabins and Motel? Accommodations for every type of traveler can be found here. Clean and convenient, you’ll find Fancy Gap Campground Cabins and Motel located just across the Parkway from Skyland Lakes Golf Club. Enjoy the fabulous Blue Ridge sunsets while relaxing by the fire pit and sipping on a local wine or enjoying a local craft beverage. If that’s not your thing, check out a variety of other lodging options nearby.
