Blue Ridge Parkway Weather

Before you get on the road, check the latest Blue Ridge Parkway weather conditions for up-to-date road reports. Elevation varies widely along the Parkway, causing temperatures and forecasts to change quickly. Stay informed with current weather updates and seasonal insights for each region — whether you’re planning a hike, drive, or overnight stay. Know before you go and enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway in every season.

Why the Parkway Closes in Winter

During winter, snow and ice can linger due to extreme cold, limited sunlight, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles — especially on bridges and shaded curves. Even when temperatures reach 60°F in nearby towns, icy conditions may persist at higher elevations. For safety, some Parkway sections stay closed for extended periods until they are confirmed safe for travel.

Certain areas without gates may remain open — but visitors should use extreme caution, respect all posted closure signs, and check official National Park Service (NPS) weather and road updates before traveling. In severe conditions, some areas may be closed to everyone, including hikers, bicyclists, and skiers.

When conditions allow, closed sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway transform into peaceful winter playgrounds. Visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, walking leashed dogs, or cycling without vehicle traffic. Always dress for changing weather, stay aware of ice, and confirm safe access before heading out.
