A weekend in Alleghany: Where the Parkway meets small town charm

Friday–Sunday Itinerary | Sparta & the Blue Ridge Parkway

Tucked along one of the most scenic stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Alleghany County offers a weekend escape that trades crowds for calm and replaces rush with rhythm. Here, the journey and the destination truly are one.

Friday: Arrival & Ease Into the Mountains

Arrive in the late afternoon and take your first deep breath of mountain air along the Blue Ridge Parkway. A stop at Cumberland Knob, the birthplace of the Parkway, is the perfect introduction—peaceful trails, open spaces, and a sense of history under your feet.

Make your way into downtown Sparta as the evening settles in. Check into your accommodations, then enjoy dinner and live music at Muddy Creek Cafe & Music Hall, where the front room feels like a cozy café and the back opens into a full music venue.

Take a short stroll down Main Street before turning in—the kind of quiet walk that reminds you you’re not in a hurry anymore.

Saturday: Views, Trails & a Taste of Local Life

Start your morning with coffee and a light breakfast at Becca’s Backwoods Bean, a local favorite known for its relaxed atmosphere and locally inspired offerings.

From there, head back to the Parkway for a visit to Doughton Park, the largest recreation area on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Take in sweeping views, explore a trail, or simply sit and enjoy the quiet.

For lunch, stop at The Bluffs Restaurant, where regional flavors and mountain heritage come together on the plate.

Spend your afternoon exploring the New River—one of the oldest rivers in the world—whether that’s a scenic drive, a quiet fishing spot, or time along the banks just watching the water move.

Return to Sparta for the evening to browse local shops, grab dinner, and, if the timing’s right, catch live music or dancing at the Alleghany Jubilee, where bluegrass and old-time traditions are still going strong.

Sunday: Slow Down Before You Go

Ease into your final morning with a relaxed breakfast in town and one more walk through Sparta.

Before heading out, take a short drive to Stone Mountain State Park, where a massive granite dome, waterfalls, and scenic trails offer one last chance to stretch your legs and take in the landscape.

Or, for a quieter farewell, return to the Parkway for a final overlook—where the mountains roll on, and the pace of life stays just the way you found it.
