Blue Ridge Parkway Wildflowers

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most biodiverse areas in North America. The wide range of elevations creates a magnificent, rolling bloom schedule that ensures spectacular wildflowers are visible nearly year-round. This is your guide to the plants and flowers you may see along America’s Favorite Drive.

The Parkway’s Blooming Schedule

The timing and variety of blooms are determined by elevation. While summer wildflowers are blooming in the valleys, the spring ephemerals are just starting to bloom on the high peaks. This variation provides an extended season of color throughout the Appalachian Highlands.

Protect the Parkway’s Flora

The rich variety of plant life along the Parkway includes rare and endangered species. To ensure these unique habitats thrive for future generations, please follow these conservation tips.

Stay on the Trail

Many native wildflowers are threatened by foot traffic. The simple act of staying on designated trails prevents trampling and protects sensitive areas.

Do Not Pick or Harvest

All plants growing on the Blue Ridge Parkway are protected, and poaching is prohibited. Historically, species like Galax were over-harvested. Leave all wildflowers and vegetation in their natural condition for others to enjoy.

Monarchs feed on native plants.
