Seasonal Weather Updates
The weather along the Blue Ridge Parkway can vary dramatically depending on elevation and season. Many sections sit at high altitudes, where temperatures are cooler, winds are stronger, and shade is more frequent than in nearby towns. Because the Parkway is not plowed or salted, higher-elevation stretches can remain wet, icy, or snow-covered long after surrounding areas have warmed. When nighttime freezes or other hazardous conditions make travel unsafe, those sections of the Parkway close to vehicle traffic until road conditions improve.
Why the Parkway Closes in Winter
During winter, snow and ice can linger due to extreme cold, limited sunlight, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles — especially on bridges and shaded curves. Even when temperatures reach 60°F in nearby towns, icy conditions may persist at higher elevations. For safety, some Parkway sections stay closed for extended periods until they are confirmed safe for travel.
Certain areas without gates may remain open — but visitors should use extreme caution, respect all posted closure signs, and check official National Park Service (NPS) weather and road updates before traveling. In severe conditions, some areas may be closed to everyone, including hikers, bicyclists, and skiers.
When conditions allow, closed sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway transform into peaceful winter playgrounds. Visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, walking leashed dogs, or cycling without vehicle traffic. Always dress for changing weather, stay aware of ice, and confirm safe access before heading out.
