Two Days in Jackson County’s Mountain Towns

The Blue Ridge Parkway reaches its highest point at Richland Balsam Overlook, 6,053 feet above sea level, in Jackson County. This 45-mile stretch along America’s favorite drive is meant to be explored. Every overlook, every winding descent into mountain valleys, every spontaneous stop adds adventure and beauty to your road trip. This customizable two-day itinerary uses the Parkway as your starting point, guiding you into the charming mountain towns of Cashiers, Sylva, Dillsboro, and Cherokee. Find year-round fun and discover one of Western North Carolina’s best-kept secrets.

Day One: Sylva’s Secret Getaway

Begin where the Parkway reaches its peak. Park at Richland Balsam Overlook (Milepost 431.4) and follow the short trail through the spruce-fir forest. At the summit, you’re standing on the highest point of the entire 469-mile Parkway.

Continue south to Cowee Mountain Overlook (Milepost 430.7) for one of the Parkway’s most scenic views. Enjoy a picturesque picnic or head to nearby Sylva for lunch at local restaurants. Some Sylva favorites are Big Nick’s Barbeque for traditional BBQ and Lulu’s On Main for a sandwich or salad. Don’t forget to check out Sylva’s antique stores for one-of-a-kind treasures tucked away in locally-owned shops.

After lunch, continue your outdoor adventure with a visit to Pinnacle Park. Immerse yourself in nature, or opt for something more challenging on the 7-mile trail, which features a scenic waterfall and massive boulders within the first mile.

Unwind after your hike at a craft brewery like Innovation Brewing and take in the scenic mountainside views while you try local brews.

Once you’re ready to relax, Sylva’s many lodging options are waiting for you. Stay at nearby hotels and inns like Dillsboro Inn, a sanctuary that sits on the Tuckasegee River. After settling in, grab dinner at ILDA, a nationally recognized restaurant that blends Italian cuisine with Appalachian flavors for an unforgettable dining experience. If you’re looking to keep the night going, Santé Wine Bar is located right next door to ILDA. Sip on top-shelf wines in this cozy wine bar and then head back to Dillsboro Inn for a rejuvenating stay.

Day Two: Dillsboro Crafts & Cashiers Adventures

Spend a slow morning savoring breakfast at Lucy in the Rye and stroll Dillsboro’s artisan village for handmade crafts, local art, and artisanal goods. Visit Dogwood Crafters and discover over 100 artisans from the region, and make sure to get a souvenir to commemorate your Jackson County visit. If you’re looking to dig deeper into North Carolina history, the Appalachian Women’s Museum showcases the spirit of Southern Appalachia.

Leave Dillsboro inspired and drive 40 minutes south to Cashiers, an outdoor lover’s paradise. Head to Panthertown Valley, known as the “Yosemite of the East,” and wander through 30 miles of backcountry hiking trails. If you’re looking for more relaxation, indulge in a massage at Cashiers Spa, roam the Cashiers Farmers Market, or lie by the water at Lake Glenville.

Once it’s time for check-in, drop your bags at the rustic Hotel Cashiers or The Wells Hotel, a boutique hotel in the heart of Cashiers. As golden hour approaches, drive to nearby Sapphire for dinner at Canyon Kitchen. Arrive early enough to claim a terrace seat overlooking stunning vistas. Watch the sun set against the mountains while enjoying locally sourced cuisine that changes with the seasons. End your Jackson County adventure with a peaceful night before getting back on the Parkway.

Plan Your Peak Trip in Jackson County

Whether you follow this itinerary or forge your own path, you’ll find the most memorable moments happen when you leave the Parkway and experience the unexpected turns that transform a scenic drive into an unforgettable journey.
