With nearly one-third of its area within the rolling Piedmont plateau, agriculture – mainly peaches, apples, cherries, grapes, and cattle – plays an important role in Patrick County‘s economy. The remaining land is in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, where the Blue Ridge Parkway forms the County’s western border with Carroll and Floyd counties to the north. The Meadows of Dan area hosts a regional visitor center within 200 yards of its Parkway exit.
Patrick County boasts four parks, including the 4,500-acre Fairy Stone State Park, which adjoins the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ 10,000-acre Philpott Lake and Dam. Five rivers – Dan, Ararat, North Mayo, South Mayo, and Smith – have headwaters in Patrick County with lots of fresh water fishing opportunities.
Motorsport fans will enjoy world class NASCAR racing at the Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, stockcar dirt track racing at the Fork Mountain Raceway, and MX and ATV racing at Lake Sugar Tree Motorsport Park.
Equally important is the area’s mountain music. The Crooked Road and Round the Mountain trails highlight traditional bluegrass music and artisan events while the new Virginia Museum of Natural History anchors the area’s cultural attractions alongside destinations like Piedmont Arts and Bassett Historical Center.
Each year, the area celebrates its beloved local treasures with two state-sanctioned festivals, the Virginia State Peach Festival and Virginia Covered Bridge Festival.
